RFF2018 third run ambassador is David Lim who has complete vision loss in one eye is determined to complete the 10KM run event. This is his story below.
I have severe myopia since birth. I can still remember I have to wear very thick glasses at a tender age of 3. In class, I used to be teased and even bullied for my weird looking thick glasses. At 10, I was diagnosed with glaucoma which is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. I had retinal detachment done at 21 , cataract treatment at 27 followed by many eye surgeries.
Despite suffering from severe vision deficiencies, I continue to stay positive and cheerful. I particularly love running and photography. On every weekend, I will go jogging and where possible, sign up for run events including full marathons. In 2015, I was finally diagnosed with acute advanced glaucoma which then resulted in rapid deterioration of my vision. I suffer from complete vision loss in right eye, tunnel vision in left eye, night-blindness and contrast deficiency. I have great difficulty judging steps and sometimes accidentally bumping into people or things. This dealt me a heavy blow which has greatly reduced my ability to engage with my interests. I have to attend white cane training and mentally, I am prepared for complete vision loss in the future.
Since the diagnosis in 2015, it took me almost a year to slowly get back to routine and I thank the support and encouragement from my family and friends. Slowly but surely, I am able to start running and I even completed the Sundown half marathon in 2016. Though the timing is nothing laudable compared to all my previous half marathons results, this run inspired me greatly. With sheer determination and confidence, I know I can overcome any obstacle that comes my way.
I have wholeheartedly agreed to come on board as one of RFL run ambassadors as I hope my journey will inspire and motivate people. This my message especially to those who are suffering from severe vision loss like me, “You can still be able to achieve your dream if you have set out for it. Do not allow any major set back in your life to derail your plan. Never give up, press on & you will overcome it. If I can do it, so can you!”
Keep your date with me. See you all at Run For Light 2018 on 3 March, Saturday.
